It's One Year Later............ Today marks the day the PREVIOUS Board of Directors and President of my alma mater, Sweet Briar College, TRIED to shut down our beloved school.
The one thing that is bittersweet (well many things) about this date, is that according to my 2015 yearly horoscope outlook from Elle UK magazine (written by the Saturn Sisters), as a Gemini, MARCH 3 was to be my LUCKIEST DAY OF THE YEAR !!! I circled and starred the day on my calendar..... Went to sleep on the 2nd, knowing that when I woke up, the 3rd would finally be here and I was ready for whatever was coming my way !!
WELL, the day began like any other. But, at 12:15pm, my phone started to light up with text messages from classmates saying they were hearing rumors that Sweet Briar is closing..... Wait, W H A T ??!! NO WAY..... Absolutely, No way this could be true..... I went to the website, and it was DOWN -- I immediately assumed the site was hacked and this was a cruel joke.....
By 12:45, I'm calling classmates to see what is happening.....
At 1pm, a mass email was sent from FORMER President Jimmy Jones, announcing the FORMER Board of Directors unanimous decision to close Sweet Briar College.
Well, if you follow my blog, you know what happened next (read more from my 3/12/15 post)..... Within 48 hours, Sweet Briar students, faculty, staff, alumnae & friends of the college, galvanized our efforts to REVERSE THE DECISION.....
And you know what, WE DID !!!!
*The silver lining -- March 3rd DID turn out to be my LUCKIEST DAY.....
For me, witnessing and working with all who are involved with Saving Sweet Briar -- meeting new alumnae & re-connecting with classmates I hadn't seen in years, reaching out to local business owners to help our cause -- has reinforced the power, passion and enduring spirit that each of us possess. It became pure joy to watch the entire Sweet Briar community rise and mobilize in a collective grassroots movement to keep the gates of our outstanding college OPEN for future generations of women !!
