At Auction

Sunday, December 29, 2013

Contents from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Patton will be hitting the auction block this weekend, January 4th & 5th. The Atlanta based couple worked with interior designer John Oetgen (written previously about herehere & here) in furnishing their 6,000 square foot Buckhead condo, which was photographed for Southern Accents NOV/DEC 2001 issue (cover above). I've included some images below from the spread that highlight the collection and are featured in the auction.

Christmas Wish List

Friday, December 27, 2013

There were only a couple of small special items that I put on my Christmas Wish List....  And thanks to Mr. Ferguson and my brother, I received all three!

Rikshaw Design's Booti Scarf in a gold hand block print pattern / Le Labo's Laurier 62 Candle - crafted with 62 ingredients (no joke!) including Rosemary, Amber, Thyme, Sandalwood and so on / The Mast Brothers recently released Cookbook, that my brother had the pair inscribe to me when he attended their chocolate tasting class at Haven's Kitchen back in November (read more here).

Holiday Happenings....

Thursday, December 19, 2013

We attended the Atlanta Botanical Garden's Garden Lights Holiday Nights event last night (my photo above of the Orchestral Orbs on the Great Lawn)....  It was our second year, and the Garden continues to pull out all the stops! More of everything than I remember from last year -- the lush landscape adorned with abundant bright color, decorative elements (the lit-up corn stalks in the Edible Garden were fantastic), Christmas Carolers singing classic tunes, a magnificent Model Trains display, and plenty of Hot Chocolate to go around! I recommend ordering tickets online and printing them at home....  The line to buy tickets was quite long and Wednesdays are considered "off-peak" (so peak nights must be busy). And an added bonus, Scoutmob is now offering a Hand-Picked DEAL to purchase tickets.

My other top choices for taking in lively Holiday entertainment are included below....

Better Half

A couple of out-of-the-way places to try for dinner have some updates....  Push Start Kitchen, which was up until very recently a wonderful Atlanta based supper club, has now opened their first brick & mortar location and taking reservations for dinner. The restaurant has been named Better Half (exterior photo above) and the menu features dishes that the Push Start diners raved about - crafted with interesting, local & in-season ingredients.

Chef David Sweeney // Menu from December 8th

Chef David Sweeney (who I've written previously about here + here), will be hosting his last Fresh Market Bites at Octane Coffee in Grant Park this Sunday, December 22. Chef Sweeney will be stepping away from Octane and pursuing some new ventures in 2014 - keep a look out for more details! We visited him last weekend, and our plates were phenomenal! Small fresh green salad; a vegan pate crafted with lentils & walnuts served with toasted rye bread slices; David's signature flat-bread topped with caramelized onions, cheese, & herbs; and for dessert, a organic date sliced down the center & stuffed with a square of dark chocolate & 3 raw almonds -- DELICIOUS!

Ponce City Market (which is being constructed as-I-type) has partnered with Rosemary Beach, FL based Tracery Interiors in launching a Pop-Up Shop -- Ponce Living by Tracery. Ponce Living by Tracery includes an assortment of stylish home furnishings - upholstered goods & accessories - balanced with the right accents of vintage pieces. The shop is open now through December 31, M-F 10am-6pm / S+S noon-6pm. Images from my visit are included above & below....

Weekend Wrap-Up

Monday, December 16, 2013

We made our visit to Christmas at Callanwolde on Saturday....  The very festive tour made up for the cold & rainy weather! I've included a couple of photos of decorated trees below, but the large scale rooms & trees don't translate at their best in the images. Christmas at Callanwolde is open through tomorrow, December 17.

Following, was our annual visit to Polly the Potter's Holiday Sale - highlighting the goods & crafts of local artisans, including handmade knitted scarfs, wood accessories, folk art style items, as well as Polly's signature ceramics. This year, I noticed she crafted a couple of large platters, with holiday designs incorporating scenes from How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, and they were wonderful!

Topping off the afternoon, we stopped into Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party (exterior image below) in Candler Park for tea & pastries....  This is one of those neighborhood spots that you've probably driven by countless times. Well, it's so fabulous -- cozy & vintage in style, and serving delicious baked goods, lite lunch items, coffee & tea. A real treat is to schedule some time to go for their High Tea service (which requires 24 hours advance notice), available from 3:30-5:30 everyday and is $30 for 2 people.

Georgia Peachez Wreaths

Friday, December 13, 2013

One of the benefits of being a vendor with One Kings Lane, is getting exposed to other sellers & their signature styles offered in a range of goods -- accessories, furniture, art, etc....   This is how I got turned onto Georgia Peachez Wreaths. Owner Suzy Spence seeks out vintage & heirloom Christmas ornaments and handcrafts them into custom one-of-a-kind wreaths. Suzy estimates that it takes about 3 hours to complete one wreath and it contains about 80-100 ornaments. When I've seen her wreaths posted on One Kings Lane, they sell out in a heartbeat! Photos of some of Suzy's wreaths above & below....

Christmas at Callanwolde

Monday, December 9, 2013

Christmas at Callanwolde is happening now through December 17....  Each room of this historic Gothic-Tudor style mansion has been paired with a designer tasked with adorning the space into one dripping with seasonal style decadence. There is also an artist market for holiday gift shopping located on the 3rd floor of the home and numerous events scheduled - Breakfast with Santa, Cocoa & Caroling, and a Holiday Centerpiece Workshop - to name a few. We attended last year's tour (some interior images below) and have a date planned to go this weekend. Proceeds from Christmas at Callanwolde benefit Callanwolde Fine Arts Center.

Love for Cacao

Cacao // Buckhead
Image AH&L

As mentioned many times on this blog (herehere, + here), I am a great fan of Cacao, a boutique bean-to-bar chocolate company founded here in Atlanta. Owner Kristen Hard has built the business from the ground up, starting with 1 tiny retail space at the front of her chocolate making kitchen, to 3 retail shops and moving her operation to a larger facility on the Westside in a continued effort to grow her business. She also travels straight to the farmers in outlying countries to personally source and select her beans.

Wednesday night, a bike shop business, Peachtree Bikes, 2 doors down from Cacao's Buckhead retail location was completely gutted by a fire that quickly destroyed the entire store (photo above). Cacao's building frame is still standing (photo at right), but the effects of the fire have devastated her business - Kristen estimates that the holiday shopping season makes up for 25% of her annual revenue - and ruined her chocolate supply especially prepared & stocked for the holidays.

Kristen's sister Kimberly has established a fund to help support Cacao and its employees while the Buckhead shop is closed until further notice and production can get back up and running. More info here.

Pollen's Holiday Wreaths

Wednesday, December 4, 2013

Our dear & longtime friends Bonnie Garrison & Chris Condon, owners of Pollen (written previously about here + here), have taken to the holiday season with their awe-inspiring handcrafted decor. The pair have designed an assortment of unique holiday wreaths with unexpected details - birch wood, moss, magnolia, white pine, honeysuckle - incorporating decorative elements foraged straight from the countryside & finished with color-rich velvet ribbon. The images, above & below, were shot on-site at Serenbe (a community nestled within the Chattahoochee Hill County) for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles.
