Lake Bound

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

I am stepping away from the blog this week and headed to lake, where there is no internet or TV, and I can't get there fast enough! But, before I head out and in the spirit of lakeside living, take a look at this (pretty fantastic) "before & after" of a 500 square foot New Hampshire boat house....  view all the interior photos here, featured in Country Living magazine.

ON THE MARKET

Friday, July 19, 2013

The oh-so charming 1830s Greek Revival home & garden that the Sag Harbor, NY home store Bloom is nestled into, is on the market....  I've read about Bloom from previous posts on Remodelista and Goop. Owner Mona Nerenberg mixes a style of old & new - linens, found objects, vintage furnishings, pantry goods - all reflecting a rich patina and timeless appeal. Photos of the home, which features a lush outdoor courtyard and a detached guest cottage, are included below....  More info on the listing here.

Take A Bite Out of the USA

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

This deliciousness is happening at Cacao (we were in last week following VA-Highland Food Truck Wednesdays)....   A rich bean-to-bar chocolate map of the USA with the state of Georgia (Cacao's home state) highlighted. News to note, Cacao is moving out of their original factory/storefront in Inman Park to a location on the Westside....  Saturday July 20 only, Cacao is offering 40% off everything at the Inman Park shop....

Remembering Franz Schneider

Franz Schneider

We were shocked and saddened to learn that Atlanta architect Franz Schneider passed away unexpectedly over the weekend....   We have had the great fortune of knowing Franz for more than a decade, and Mr. Ferguson counts him as a dear friend. The photo above was taken last summer while the two were having lunch together at The Optimist....

Whether you realized it or not, you've probably passed by one of Franz's designs, as he built residences in a number of pocket neighborhoods around town -- a cluster of townhomes in Brookhaven and Lenox Mall area, a private residence for one of his sisters in Peachtree Hills and another for a sister in Virginia Highland. Franz also concentrated his designs in the Berkeley Park neighborhood, a stone's throw away from what would become the bustling Westside shopping/dining district. A number of years ago, he had the vision that this area would be on the rise, and custom designed/built a house for himself. This eventually led to Franz buying up the dilapidated bungalows surrounding him, and replacing them with his signature style of forward thinking contemporary architecture....  Photos below are examples of his work.

Star Provisions + Summerland

"Summerland: Recipes for Celebrating with Southern Hospitality" // Anne Stiles Quatrano

Last Thursday night, we were over on the Westside having dinner at JCT Kitchen, and following our meal (and since it seemed like forever since we had been on this side of town) walked around the Star Provisions complex....  Getting a chance to window shop at Jonathan Adler, Ann & Sid Mashburn, checking out the new scoop shop location for Jeni's Ice Cream.... And making a stop into Star Provisions, the go-to resource for all pantry & gift giving needs. Its storefront space is positioned as a sort of gateway to Bacchanalia, one of Atlanta's finest restaurants, and this culinary collective is owned by chefs and husband & wife couple Clifford Harrison and Anne Quatrano. The design of this floor plan results in Star Provisions sharing the same evening hours as the restaurant, remaining open until midnight Monday-Saturday.

A visit to Star Provisions is a treat on so many levels....  Not only are you offered a selection of the most interesting products sourced through artisans and local farmers, but the visual display of these hand selected items are a feast for the eyes! While making our way around the space, I noted a small stack of postcard shaped cards with the news and book-cover image (shown above) announcing the release of Anne Quatrano's upcoming cookbook, Summerland: Recipes for Celebrating with Southern Hospitality, due out October 1. Summerland also serves as the name of her family farm in the Cartersville, GA area, about 45 minutes northwest of town. It's an almost magical landscape (having had the opportunity to visit for a Food & Wine event a number of years ago), and serves as a working farm that provides the freshest ingredients for the 4 restaurants that Harrison and Quatrano own. My photo below of the Star Provisions interior really doesn't do it justice....  Make sure you set aside some time to stop in & savour!

Serenbe + House Style

A Beautiful Life in a Smart & Small Space

Plan a quick getaway south of town to Serenbe, an idyllic hamlet nestled within the heart of Chattahoochee Hill Country. This weekend Serenbe plays co-host to the reveal of the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams furnished showhouse, A Beautiful Life in a Smart & Small Space, a 900 square foot designed home recently built in the Nest neighborhood. An opening party is being held Saturday July 13, and the cottage with be open to the public Saturdays 11am-6pm & Sundays 12pm-6pm....  Details below.

Last summer, Bosch took part in sponsoring and providing home solutions for a "net zero" home - a completely energy efficient space - in a selected Serenbe cottage, and Jill Sharp Brinson, creative director at Ballard Designs provided the home's decor....  Photos of the interior below....  Also to note, the home is currently on the market.

Novak Djokovic and Jelena Ristic

Novak Djokovic may have lost in the finals at Wimbledon this past Sunday, but his girlfriend Jelena Ristic took first prize in her dress selection for Novak's foundation gala held in London on Monday night....  Jelena is wearing a blue and white striped Oscar de la Renta gown from his Spring 2013 collection.

Front Yard Garden

Monday, July 8, 2013

This is my neighbor's front yard garden....  And it is truly a sight to see! She has tiered her front lawn and from edge to edge planted fruits, veggies, flowers (giant Sunflowers), and herbs....  Last week she left a bag of fresh picked arugula for me and it was fantastic!!

Years past, Atlanta struggled through drought conditions with mandatory restrictions on all watering. So the thought of planting anything new was seemingly out of the question. But this Summer, we have the (consistent) rain to thank for helping all of our gardens burst with blooms! I like to stop by Farmer D Organics, our local landscape supply store, when in need of plants, accessories, gardening questions answered, etc....  Farmer D offers a chock full selection of various sized cedar box beds, tools, and custom organic fertilizer, planting mix, & compost.

FOODIE News to Note

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

A couple of favorites that I've talked about in previous blog posts (1234), have new news to report....   Ohio based ice cream maker, Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, will be opening a scoop shop towards the end of August on the Westside of town right next door to Star Provisions. This comes on the heels of the rumor mill suggesting that Jeni's is also looking at retail space in the being-constructed-as-I-type, Ponce City Market.

Additionally, my local coffee shop, Steady Hand Pour House, who lost their space here in Emory Village a couple months back (read more), has announced a partnership with The Bakery at Cakes & Ale (a cafe that I have made quite clear is my go-to #1 spot). Kicking off July 9, the Steady Hand crew will command the coffee side of things at The Bakery, and also watch for some overall design changes happening to the interior of the cafe.

*Something about Summer that somehow turns the majority of my posts into food related stories....  This happened last year too -- read more here.
